Radon Testing & Mitigation

Radon is a hazardous, naturally occurring gas that results from the decay of trace amounts of uranium found in the earth's crust. Odorless and invisible, radon has been classified (by the Environmental Protection Agency) as a carcinogen since 1988, and is the leading cause of cancer among nonsmokers in of the U.S.

Dangerous levels of radon can accumulate inside a house, however. The soil under and around the house is by far the largest source of radon gas.

There is no safe level of radon exposure. It's recommended to have the lowest levels possible to reduce the risks of cancer.

Testing

For the most accurate and immediate test results our certified radon measurement professionals can provide you radon testing services with calibrated instruments. Our trained professionals will set a Continuous Radon Monitor in an appropriate location for 1 to 3 days. The monitor takes measurements throughout the testing period which are displayed on a Radon Measurement Report provided at completion.

If you need your house tested to determine the current radon level, NAQS can help. Likewise, if you have already tested your radon levels and are seeking advice on next steps due to a high measurement contact us today for a free consultation.

Mitigation

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends mitigating any building that's radon test returns a radon measurement at or above 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Once a building's radon levels are measured and found to be unhealthy, a radon mitigation system is specially designed to effectively reduce the levels to a healthier amount.

Some radon mitigation, reduction, or abatement systems are proven to have a 99% success rate!

There are several methods or systems available that reduce radon levels. The EPA generally recommends methods that prevent radon from entering, such as soil suction, that draws the radon from below the basement or crawl space floor pushes it out into the outside air.

Multifamily Buildings

The Federal Housing Finance Agency has implemented enhanced radon testing requirements for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac multifamily properties regardless of location.

If you are applying for funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the purchase or refinancing of a multifamily property, you are required to include proof of radon testing and mitigation if elevated levels of radon gas are found.

If you have had your property tested and your radon level is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher, NAQS can install a radon reduction system to reduce radon levels in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and the HUD Radon Policy. We offer radon testing and mitigation services for all multifamily dwellings, including condos, townhouses, and apartment buildings

Schools

Since schools may be the second largest contributor to a child's radon exposure (or to teachers or staff), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that radon testing be conducted at all school buildings and that action be taken to reduce elevated radon levels.

Radon health risks in schools CAN be significantly reduced. Districts can take simple, low cost actions today to implement a program to test their buildings for radon and install radon mitigation systems if needed.
